Description
WWII/Korean War-Era Medical Aid Station Marker Flag, Approximately 36 x 21 Inches, Appliqued Red Greek Cross on White Cotton Field with Grommeted Hoist Offered here is a vintage medical marker flag of the type flown or displayed to identify aid stations, field hospitals, casualty collection points, and medical transport during the World War II and Korean War era. Measuring roughly 36 by 21 inches, the flag is constructed of white cotton or canvas with a large red Greek cross appliqued to the center field. No maker’s mark or contract stamp is visible on the header in the photographs, consistent with unmarked wartime commercial or military production of the period. No separate published history attaches to this individual example, and its significance rests in its type and construction rather than in any documented unit or recipient provenance. Under the protective provisions of the Geneva Convention, the red cross on a white ground was the internationally recognized emblem denoting medical personnel, installations, and transport exempt from attack. During the Second World War, the U.S. Army Medical Department and the American Red Cross relied on flags of this size and configuration to mark aid stations, hospital tents, and casualty evacuation points both at the front and in rear-area medical facilities, a practice that carried forward into the Korean War and paralleled civil defense use on the home front. Such flags were functional, workaday items, run up over tents and vehicles where fast visual identification of a protected medical site was essential, and comparatively few survive today still bearing honest service wear. The flag is of white cotton or canvas construction with a red cross appliqued and machine-stitched to the field, the outline of the applique and its stitching visible from the reverse. A reinforced, doubled header runs the length of the hoist edge, fitted with a brass grommet at each end. No maker’s label, size stamp, or printed marking is apparent on the header or field in the supplied photographs. The flag is the sole item in the lot. Condition is consistent with genuine age and use: numerous fold creases run throughout the fabric from long-term folded storage, the white field shows scattered light staining, age toning, and general surface soiling, and the stitching securing the cross applique shows minor fraying and loose threads along its raw edges. Both brass grommets remain intact and sound, showing light patina consistent with age. A solid, honestly worn example of the protective emblem that marked America’s medical units through two mid-century wars – more workhorse relic than parade piece, but scarce and evocative all the same.
