Lot 193:
Description
WWII British/Commonwealth Airspeed Horsa Glider Pilot’s Quick-Release Lap Seat Belt by Switlik Canadian Parachute Ltd., Montreal, dated 1943 Offered here is an original World War II cockpit lap seat belt of the type fitted to the Airspeed AS.51 Horsa assault glider, flown by pilots of the British Army’s Glider Pilot Regiment and supporting RAF crews. Manufactured by Switlik Canadian Parachute Ltd. of Montreal and clearly dated 1943, the belt retains crisp ink stamps and inspection marks confirming its wartime Canadian production for Commonwealth airborne forces. No individual pilot or aircraft association has been identified; the belt is offered as a well-documented equipment type from the Horsa program, its story resting in the manufacturing and issue record rather than a personal biography. The Horsa glider was the workhorse of British and Commonwealth airborne assault, carrying troops, jeeps, and light artillery into some of the war’s most pivotal operations – the coup de main landings at Pegasus and Horsa Bridges during Operation Tonga on the night of 5-6 June 1944, the costly but daring drops of Operation Market Garden at Arnhem in September 1944, and the massed daylight assault of Operation Varsity across the Rhine in March 1945. Horsa cockpits were spartan and built for a single hard landing; pilots relied on heavy webbing restraints such as this to hold them secure through violent, often uncontrolled touchdowns in enemy-held fields and forests. The pull-loop quick-release was a critical safety feature, letting a pilot free himself in seconds to fight, assist casualties, or escape a damaged airframe. Wartime demand for such specialized safety equipment outstripped British manufacturing capacity, and Canadian firms like Switlik were contracted to produce parachute harnesses and glider restraints to Air Ministry pattern for shipment overseas. The belt is constructed of wide, heavy-duty cotton webbing in its original light-tan color, fitted with a substantial nickel-plated sliding quick-release buckle, a webbing pull-loop and D-ring release assembly, and stitched adjustment straps, terminating at each end in reinforced brass grommets for anchoring to the cockpit frame. The reverse bears the repeated ink stamp
