Description
Order of St Michael and St George sash – Saxon blue and scarlet. Full-dress sash of the Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George: wide moire silk in Saxon blue with a broad scarlet centre stripe, fringed ends, and a sewn bow carrying the gilt suspension ring for the badge. Two worked buttonholes (purple silk) on the inner tail for the usual fastening. Founded in 1818 by the Prince Regent for service in Malta and the Ionian Islands, the order became the standard British honour for diplomats, colonial governors and senior officers in the Mediterranean and overseas empire-CMG in the ranks, KCMG and GCMG with this sash. The colours are those of the original statutes, unchanged through two world wars. Silk with expected fold wear, light soiling and fringe loss at the ends; ring intact; no badge present. A correct period sash for a Knight Commander or Knight Grand Cross of St Michael and St George.
