Charles W. Lindberg Signed Iwo Jima First Flag-Raising Archive with RR Auction COA. Signed grouping from Corporal Charles W. Lindberg, E Company, 28th Marines, 5th Marine Division-the last survivor of the six who raised the first flag on Mount Suribachi, 10:30 a.m., 23 February 1945. Rosenthal’s photograph four hours later became the icon; Lindberg’s patrol, under 1st Lt. Harold Schrier, put the smaller colors from the transport Missoula on the crater first. He is the Marine in the foreground of this print, carbine across his knees, helmet on, while the staff goes up behind him. Bold felt-tip signature Charles W. Lindberg across the sky.
With the 8×10: two typed letters signed, June and July 1988, to collector Randall Sutherland-E/28/5th, ninth wave, three-quarters of an hour up the mountain, first flag at 10:30, second at 2:30, "the 1st flag to fly over Japanese territory in World War II, " flag from the Missoula. Two signed V-Mail reproductions of the same account, headed Iwo Jima / 3rd Plt. E Co. 28th Regiment. R&R Enterprises certificate of authenticity (Catalog 306, Item 395). Photocopies of a Minnesota "Charles Lindberg Week" proclamation and a commendation letter. Photo clean; letters and V-Mails crisp; signatures strong.
