Description

WWII Theatre-Made Three-Piece Frogskin Camouflage Parachute Swimsuit – Bandeau Top, High-Waisted Briefs, and Pleated Overskirt, Fashioned from U.S. Jungle Camouflage Parachute Cloth and Shroud Line, circa 1943-1946 Offered here is a complete, three-piece sweetheart swimsuit ensemble hand-fabricated from World War II U.S. military ‘frogskin’ jungle camouflage parachute cloth: a gathered bandeau bikini top, matching high-waisted brief bottoms, and a pleated overskirt, all cut from the same mottled duck-hunter patterned canopy fabric and finished with narrow shroud-line cord repurposed as ties and drawstrings. Parachute silk ranked among the most prized improvised textiles of the Second World War. Wartime rationing of civilian dress goods, paired with the ready supply of surplus and battle-damaged canopies across the Pacific and China-Burma-India theatres, prompted servicemen, nurses, and local seamstresses to rework fine ripstop and twill panels into scarves, slips, wedding gowns, and playsuits. Jungle-pattern ‘frogskin’ parachutes, issued for personnel and airdrop use from 1943 onward, were especially favored for this kind of GI-made craft, their distinctive green-and-tan camouflage lending an unmistakably martial character to garments never intended for military service. The Naval History and Heritage Command holds a closely comparable 1944 theatre-made parachute bikini in its PhoM2c Fein collection, underscoring that such sweetheart and souvenir pieces, while individually scarce, represent a recognized category of Pacific War textile improvisation; no connection between that example and this lot is claimed. The bandeau top is gathered and knotted at center front, with narrow shroud-cord ties extending from both cups for neck and back adjustment. The brief bottoms are high-waisted with a bound center-front seam, shaped leg openings finished in matching bias tape, and cord ties at the hip. The overskirt is fitted to a belted waistband with belt loops and a shroud-cord drawstring, its body formed of bold vertical box-pleats reinforced by parallel rows of stitching, all three garments sharing the identical frogskin print. The lot comprises the three garments illustrated, with no additional accessories, tags, or documentation present. Condition is fair to good for a vintage, handmade wartime textile: expect fraying and loose threads along raw edges and cord ties, minor seam stress, general creasing, and light staining and oxidation consistent with theatre construction and decades of storage. The shroud-cord ties and gathered attachment points are fragile and warrant careful handling. A rare and evocative survivor of GI ingenuity, this complete frogskin parachute swimsuit set captures the improvisational spirit of the Pacific War in a form few collectors ever encounter intact.
