Lot 28:
Description
WWII 82nd Airborne / 504th PIR Devils in Baggy Pants Insignia & Sweetheart Group (8pc). WWII 82nd Airborne Division and 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment insignia and homefront sweetheart grouping (8 pieces) – Gemsco sterling jump wings, a numbered 504th "D" Company crossed-rifles collar device, and a matched pair of enameled 82nd Airborne AA brooches. This compact but well-rounded lot brings together the field insignia and civilian keepsakes associated with the 82nd Airborne Division’s storied 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment. No individually named recipient or biographical file accompanies the grouping; its documented connection is to the regiment and division rather than to a single identified soldier, and the presence of both full-size and miniature sweetheart-scale duplicates strongly suggests a paired set – one piece worn by the trooper, its smaller twin worn at home by a wife, mother, or sweetheart. Activated 1 May 1942 and assigned to the 82nd Airborne that August, the 504th PIR fought across the Mediterranean and northwest European theaters, jumping into Sicily and Salerno before holding the Anzio beachhead against relentless German counterattack – fighting so fierce that German radio propaganda dubbed the regiment’s paratroopers the "Devils in Baggy Pants, " a name the unit wore with pride ever after. Held in reserve during Normandy, the regiment returned to combat for Operation Market Garden in September 1944, its 3rd Battalion spearheading the daylight assault crossing of the Waal River at Nijmegen in improvised canvas boats under withering fire, one of the most celebrated small-unit actions of the airborne war. The crossed U.S. and French flags lapel pin in this lot echoes the Liberation-era sentiment common to veterans and families of units that fought across France that autumn. The full-size Parachutist Badge is die-struck clutch-back sterling silver, reverse-marked GEMSCO STERLING, with light expected tarnish. A smaller sweetheart-scale parachutist wing, pinback-mounted and unmarked, mirrors the larger badge in miniature. The officer’s gilt crossed-rifles 504th Infantry collar insignia bears an applied "504" numeral above the crossed muskets and a small "D" company designator, retaining its pin posts. A pair of cut-out embroidered blue-and-white AIRBORNE shoulder arc tabs show differing curvature, with edge fraying and thread loss most pronounced on the lower example. A matched pair of larger enameled 82nd Airborne distinctive insignia sweetheart brooches – red, white, and blue shield form with AIRBORNE arc and AA monogram – remain pinback-mounted with bright, intact enamel. A miniature version of the same design, its base marked "82ND DIV." and reverse indistinctly stamped ending in STERLING, and a separate enameled crossed U.S./French flags pin round out the group. Condition throughout is good to very good for age: the sterling wings show only light surface tarnish; the embroidered tabs exhibit honest fraying and loss along their edges; the enameled pieces retain strong, glossy color with minor surface scuffing and reverse-side oxidation typical of seventy-plus years. All pin backs, clutch fasteners, and closures remain intact and functional. No case or accompanying paper is present. A tightly assembled 504th PIR grouping pairing hard-worn paratrooper insignia with the sweetheart jewelry that carried the memory of the Devils in Baggy Pants back to the home front.
