Description

WWII USN M-422A Goatskin Flight Jacket, USN Stenci. World War II U.S. Navy M-422A Intermediate Flight Jacket in brown goatskin, mouton fur collar, bi-swing back, and stenciled "USN" beneath the collar Offered here is an original World War II-era United States Navy M-422A intermediate flight jacket, the rugged goatskin garment issued to Navy and Marine Corps aviators during the height of the Pacific and Atlantic air campaigns. The jacket retains a faded but legible "USN" stencil beneath the mouton collar, a strong period-correct feature consistent with naval contract issue, though the maker’s spec label at the collar has been lost, leaving only stitch remnants and a leather tab stub where it was once sewn. Approved in October 1940, the M-422A represented a refinement of the earlier M-422 pattern, most notably the addition of a dedicated pencil slot to the left front flap pocket – a small but telling detail for aircrew who needed quick access to plotting tools and charts in the cockpit. Constructed of supple, chrome-tanned goatskin with a bi-swing gusseted back for freedom of movement at the controls and a thick mouton fur collar for warmth at altitude, the M-422A was worn by Navy and Marine aviators across the Pacific and Atlantic theaters, with jackets of this general pattern also associated with the American Volunteer Group
