Description
U.S. Navy G-1 Intermediate Flight Jacket, MIL-J-7823 (AER), by L.W. Foster Sportswear Co., Inc., Contract N383-22356A, Size 38, circa 1955-1956, bearing an embroidered squadron patch for the 71st Fighter Interceptor Squadron "The Iron Hand" Offered here is a well-worn, honestly used example of the classic Navy G-1 intermediate flight jacket, manufactured under contract by L.W. Foster Sportswear Co., Inc.-a name consistently prized by militaria and flight-jacket collectors for the superior goatskin leather and tailoring associated with mid-1950s production. The jacket carries no name or personal inscription; its story rests entirely in its government contract markings and its Cold War-era squadron association rather than an individually documented recipient, and no separate biography accompanies it. Standardized for Navy and Marine Corps aviators, the G-1 pattern became so favored for its warmth, durability, and comfortable cut that it was frequently sought after by flyers well outside the naval establishment. This example bears an embroidered chest patch for the 71st Fighter Interceptor Squadron, an Air Defense Command unit tasked with the air defense of North American airspace during the height of the Cold War, flying a succession of frontline interceptors including the F-86 Sabre, F-89 Scorpion, and later the F-102 Delta Dagger. The presence of an Air Force interceptor squadron’s insignia on a Navy-pattern jacket reflects the well-known period practice of Air Force pilots privately acquiring the rugged G-1 in preference to, or alongside, their issued flight jackets-an interesting detail of interservice crossover from the continental air-defense era. The jacket is constructed of brown goatskin leather with a mouton fur collar, knit waistband and cuffs, and the expected bi-swing back and twin button-flap chest pockets. Inside the collar, the original woven contract label survives, its yellow lettering now partially faded but still legible for "SPECIFICATION MIL-J-7823 (AER), " "L.W. FOSTER SPORTSWEAR CO. INC, " "CONTRACT N383-22356A, " and size "38," together with the original leather hanging loop. The embroidered 71st FIS patch remains sewn to the left chest, depicting a white winged fist gripping a red-and-yellow lightning bolt against a blue roundel, encircled in yellow and bordered below by a yellow scroll reading "71ST FTR. INTCP. SQ., " with only minor fraying to its edge borders. Condition is very good. The mouton collar shows localized balding and fabric loss along the neck seam; the goatskin exhibits overall creasing, surface wear, and an attractive age-toned patina; and the knit waist and cuffs display pilling, stretching, and light fraying typical of original 1950s knitwear. The zipper and button-flap pockets appear complete and functional in the photographs. A genuine, honestly worn L.W. Foster G-1 carrying the scarce and graphically striking insignia of a Cold War interceptor squadron-an affordable and characterful entry point into naval flight jacket history with an unmistakable Air Defense Command twist.
