WWII Luftwaffe LKp S 101 Flight Helmet w/ Mi 4b Mi. WWII German Luftwaffe LKp S 101 Summer Flying Helmet with Integrated Ln 26602 Earphones and Mi 4b Throat Microphones, DeTeWe, Dated 1940 This lot presents an original World War II German Luftwaffe LKp S 101 summer flying helmet, complete with its integrated avionics harness and dual-transducer Mi 4b throat microphone assembly. The helmet’s interior satin lining bears a legible manufacturer’s label identifying it as a Fl. Kopfhaube Gr. built to Baumuster LKp S 101 pattern, with Geraet-Nr. 124-436B and Anf. Ln 26617 equipment reference, produced by Deutsche Telephonwerke und Kabelindustrie AG (DeTeWe), one of the principal contractors supplying communications equipment to the Luftwaffe. Stamped acceptance markings and inked date notations on the label place manufacture within 1940, the opening phase of the air war over Britain and Western Europe, though the photographs do not establish an individual wearer, unit or operational theater. The LKp S 101 was the lightweight warm-weather counterpart to the padded winter Kopfhaube, cut from tan canvas twill rather than heavier leather, and issued broadly to fighter and bomber crews for whom cockpit heat made the winter pattern impractical. Its molded brown leather ear housings concealed Ln 26602 earphones wired into the aircraft’s intercom and radio circuits, while the accompanying Mi 4b throat microphone – worn snug against the larynx rather than in front of the mouth – was engineered to filter engine and slipstream noise, a design solution that allowed clearer voice transmission than contemporary boom microphones and became a hallmark of German aviation communications through the middle war years. The helmet is constructed of tan canvas twill with a fleece-lined interior and satin crown lining, brown leather edge trim, and molded leather ear cup housings, each retaining an Ln 26602 earphone unit visible through its fleece surround. The throat microphone assembly is a horseshoe-shaped brown leather collar fitted with two red-brown transducer housings, one legibly marked with the Ln 26779-2 equipment reference.
