Description

WWII German Luftwaffe LKp W 101 Winter Leather Flying Helmet – Baumuster LKpW101, Geraet-Nr. 124-436A, Werk-Nr. Ln 26618, maker code "hdc" This lot offers a genuine Second World War German Luftwaffe cold-weather flying helmet of the LKp W 101 pattern (Fliegerkopfhaube fuer Winter), the standard winter headgear issued to fighter, bomber, and transport aircrews flying unpressurized aircraft at high altitude. No individual named recipient, squadron, or unit association has been documented for this example; its story rests in the surviving factory label and construction details rather than in a published biography or citation. The LKp W 101 was engineered to combat the extreme cold encountered by German aircrew operating in open or poorly heated cockpits at altitude across every theater of the war, from the Eastern Front to the skies over Western Europe. Lined internally with dense sheepskin and shearling fur, the helmet was cut to seal tightly around the head and ears while leaving clearance for goggles and an oxygen mask. The helmet presents in dark brown pebble-grain leather with stitched crown panels and rigid, leather-covered earcups intact on both sides. A woven cloth adjustment strap crosses the back of the crown between two leather button tabs, each retaining its original button and leather-covered toggle. Leather chin straps with a blackened metal buckle on one side descend from the earcups, one strap terminating in a worn, pointed leather tip and the other retaining a length of lighter, perforated leather strapping. Inside, the natural fur-and-shearling lining surrounds a stitched cloth label reading "Fl. Kopfhaube Gr., " "Baumuster LKpW101," "Geraet-Nr. 124-436A, " "Werk-Nr. Ln 26618," and the manufacturer code "hdc"; the Anf.Z. field is unfilled. Condition is good for an issued wartime flying helmet of this type. The leather shell shows scattered surface scuffing, moderate rub wear, and edge scuffing throughout, with notably heavier finish loss and lightening to the rigid earcups where the outer leather has thinned from repeated contact and handling, exposing lighter leather beneath in a distinct worn patch on the right earcup. The sheepskin and shearling lining remains well-preserved throughout the interior, retaining good color and loft, and the factory cloth label is fully intact and clearly legible. A solidly identified LKp W 101 winter flying helmet, its stamped Geraet-Nr. and legible factory label offering collectors a well-preserved example of the cold-weather headgear worn by German aircrew throughout the war.
