Description

WWII U.S. Navy / USMC NAF 1092S Summer Cloth Flight Helmet, Contract NXS-9677, by Slote & Klein, with fitted leather earphone housings for TH-37 receiver elements Offered here is an original World War II-era U.S. Navy and Marine Corps aviator’s flight helmet of the NAF 1092S pattern, manufactured under Contract NXS-9677 by the firm of Slote & Klein. As with most surviving examples of this type, no individual pilot’s name or squadron assignment can be tied to this particular helmet, and its story rests in the surviving contract markings and the documented service history of the pattern itself rather than in a published biography. The Naval Aircraft Factory 1092 series was the standard-issue aviator’s flight helmet supplied to Navy and Marine Corps flight personnel throughout the Second World War. While early and cold-weather pattern helmets were constructed of heavier leather lined with chamois for high-altitude and northern operations, the lightweight cotton twill "summer" variant offered here – denoted by the ‘S’ suffix in its designation – was developed for warm-climate flying, seeing considerable use in Pacific theater operations where tropical heat made the heavier leather helmets impractical. Communications gear was built directly into the design: leather earphone housings at each ear were fitted to carry Western Electric/Telephonics TH-37 receiver elements, connected by a co-axial lead routed across the rear of the helmet beneath fabric retaining loops, allowing the wearer to remain in constant radio contact with his aircraft’s intercom or command circuit through the roar of engine and slipstream noise. The shell is sewn from tan cotton twill in shaped panels with a bound face opening and elasticized rear skirt. Covered leather earphone housings are fitted on both sides, with the black rubber-coated wiring harness visible looping across the crown between them; the housings retain their felt-lined cups intended to seat the TH-37 elements, though the wiring has been truncated and electrical function has not been tested. A leather chin-cup strap descends from the lower edge, adjusting through a nickel-finish buckle, with the suede-textured cup itself showing honest handling wear. Inside, the black woven contract label reads "NAF 1092S / CONT. NXS-9677 / SLOTE & KLEIN, " fully intact and clearly legible against the interior cloth. The tan fabric shows light surface handling and faint, even age-toning consistent with a helmet of this vintage, with no major tears evident; there is some minor fraying and loose threads around one ear housing where the leather meets the cloth shell. The leather chin cup and earphone housings exhibit slight age-related creasing but remain supple and structurally sound. Overall the helmet presents in very good to excellent condition for an item of this type and age, retaining its full communications hardware rather than the stripped, unrigged examples more commonly seen on the market. A well-preserved, clearly contract-marked NAF 1092S summer flying helmet that retains its fitted TH-37 earphone housings and wiring, embodying the practical, communications-integrated equipment worn by Navy and Marine aviators across the Pacific and Atlantic theaters of World War II.
