Lot 411:
Description
World War II U.S. Navy Bureau of Aeronautics Specification M-450 Summer Aviator’s Flying Helmet by B-G Inc., khaki twill shell densely signed by squadron mates including "Bob James, " "Herb, " and "Holland, " with detached chin cup Offered here is a Second World War U.S. Navy Specification M-450 lightweight khaki twill flying helmet, the standard warm-climate and carrier-deck headgear issued to Navy and Marine Corps pilots and aircrew, preserved not as a plain issue example but as a densely signed personal memento. No separate published biography accompanies the piece; its story is told through the names inked and penciled across its crown and panels, and through the surviving contract markings sewn into the shell. Among the more legible inscriptions are "Bob James, " "Herb, " and "Holland, " together with numerous other names, initials, and partial signatures that invite further research. The M-450 was ubiquitous aboard U.S. carriers and at stateside and Pacific training fields alike, its unlined cotton twill construction and cloth goggle-strap retention loops built for tropical and shipboard wear where the heavier winter helmet types were impractical. It was standard practice among naval aviators and aircrewmen – particularly at the close of a flight training course, at the end of a combat tour, or upon discharge – to pass such helmets among squadron mates and classmates for signing, turning ordinary flight gear into an informal roster of a unit’s men. The dense, overlapping signatures across this example, some crossed and re-signed in different hands, are entirely consistent with that tradition, though their precise unit, training class, and date of signing cannot be established from the piece alone. The helmet retains its khaki cotton twill shell, reinforced crown seams, cloth goggle-strap retention loops, and dual chinstrap buckle fittings. The interior woven label reads "HELMETS, SUMMER AVIATORS / BU-AERO-U.S. NAVY / SPECIFICATION M-450 / B-G INC. / CONTRACT N-1008-A, " fully intact and legible. A detached olive-green leather chin cup with chamois-style lining and its integral leather adjustment strap accompanies the helmet. Condition is fair to good for the age and use of the piece. The twill fabric shows widespread soiling, light staining, creasing, and overall age toning, with several signatures faint or smudged from handling while others remain boldly legible in both ink and pencil. The detached chin cup exhibits pronounced crazing, cracking, and finish loss to its leather surface, along with a tear to its upper attachment strap. The woven specification label remains crisp and fully readable despite the general wear surrounding it. A visually striking, multi-signed M-450 summer flying helmet that preserves both a genuine wartime Navy aviation pattern and the handwritten roster of the men who wore and shared it.
