Description

WWII U.S. Marine Corps Khaki Pressed Fiber Sun/Pith Helmet with Bronze Eagle, Globe, and Anchor Device and Original Leather Chinstrap Offered here is an original World War II U.S. Marine Corps pressed fiber sun helmet, retaining its darkened bronze-finish Eagle, Globe, and Anchor (EGA) device mounted to the front of the crown. No individual recipient or unit history has been documented with this particular example; its interest rests in the well-established official record of the type’s development and widespread issue during the Second World War rather than in a personal provenance. First adopted in 1940 as the "Helmet, Fiber, " this pattern was developed using the same molded, waterproof pressed-fiber process later applied to early M1 helmet liners, and was manufactured for the Corps by firms such as Hawley Products Company. It quickly became a familiar sight at Marine Corps training depots at Parris Island and San Diego, where it was worn extensively by drill instructors, rifle-range coaches, and recruits standing long hours under the sun, as well as by personnel on tropical station duty in the years surrounding the Pacific campaigns. The design’s lightweight, ventilated shell and glare-reducing green underbrim made it practical working headgear rather than combat protection, and its historical appeal lies in the everyday routines of wartime Marine training and tropical service. The helmet is constructed of pressed khaki twill-covered fiber, retaining its molded, paneled crown, covered crown button, and wide circumferential brim edged in a darker binding. Brass-rimmed ventilation grommets are set into each side of the crown. The front bears the bronze-finish USMC Eagle, Globe, and Anchor insignia, firmly mounted and showing an attractive overall age patina consistent with genuine wartime handling. The interior retains its pale green glare-reducing surface, the original wire-clip suspension system, and a leather sweatband with rear lace closure; the original leather chinstrap with buckle remains attached and is currently positioned across the front brim. Condition is good and consistent with age and service use: the khaki exterior shows scattered scuffs, light surface soiling, and edge wear along the brim rim, with the crown button intact throughout. The bronze EGA is solidly affixed with no significant damage. The green interior surface displays typical scuffing and handling wear, and the leather sweatband and chinstrap show expected age creasing, stiffening, and edge wear commensurate with decades of use. A solid, display-ready example of the iconic USMC fiber sun helmet, its bronze EGA and surviving leather fittings preserving the look of wartime Marine training and tropical duty.
