Description
Vietnam-Era M1 Helmet, Mitchell Cover, Marmac Line. Vietnam War-Era U.S. M1 Steel Combat Helmet with Marmac Industries Liner and Reversible Mitchell Pattern Camouflage Cover, circa 1960s-early 1970s Offered here is a U.S. M1 combat helmet assembly of the Vietnam War period, comprising a steel outer shell, a Marmac Industries fiber liner, and its reversible Mitchell pattern camouflage cover with elastic foliage band. Its significance rests in the correct period configuration and completeness of the assembly. The M1 helmet served as the standard-issue steel helmet of the U.S. Armed Forces from 1941 through the mid-1980s, its two-part construction of a suspended liner within a protective steel shell allowing the basic pattern to be updated across successive conflicts. By the height of American involvement in Vietnam, the liner had been produced in lightweight resin-impregnated fiber by contractors including Marmac, Firestone, and Capac, while the now-iconic reversible Mitchell pattern cover had become standard issue in the field. Reflecting foliage in dense green on one face and a broken brown-and-tan scheme on the reverse, the cover allowed a soldier to adapt his camouflage to jungle canopy or more open, arid terrain simply by turning the cover inside out. Slits cut into the fabric permitted local vegetation to be woven in for additional concealment, while the encircling elastic band held the cover taut against the shell and doubled, in practice, as a place to tuck insect repellent, cigarettes, or a field dressing. The steel shell retains its original olive-drab finish and swivel bail loops fitted with a web chinstrap and metal clips. The Mitchell cover is fitted green-side out, its printed leaf pattern visible across the crown, brim, and sides, with the reverse brown-and-tan cloud pattern showing at the folded underside edges; an olive elastic foliage band encircles the cover at the brim line. Inside, the liner bears a molded helmet-crest device enclosing the letter M, identifying it as a product of Marmac Industries Inc.
