Description

World War II German Army officer’s M43 field cap (Einheitsfeldmuetze M43), constructed in field-gray wool and retaining its distinctive officer-grade silver insignia. Introduced in 1943 as a standardized field cap for the German Army, the M43 combined the practical features of earlier mountain and field caps with a short visor and fold-down side and rear panels that could be lowered for protection in cold weather. This example is of the officer configuration, distinguished by its separately applied silver-wire national eagle and national cockade. The eagle is finely executed in silver-colored metallic thread on a dark backing and mounted high on the front of the crown. Beneath it is the circular cockade with red center and silver outer embroidery, positioned immediately above the front opening of the fold-down earflap section. The use of higher-grade metallic insignia is characteristic of officer and privately purchased examples rather than the simpler woven insignia normally encountered on standard enlisted field caps. The cap body is manufactured from dark feldgrau wool with a substantial short visor and the characteristic M43 fold-down side panels. The front ends of the flap meet beneath the cockade and retain the buttonhole/closure arrangement. The sides and rear show the characteristic sculpted M43 profile, while the interior is lined in tan cotton material. No readily visible maker or size markings are apparent in the photographs. The cap exhibits genuine field character, with overall age toning, surface wear, scattered soiling, minor moth tracking or fabric loss, and wear to the front flap and edges. The interior lining likewise shows age, discoloration, and evidence of extended use. The insignia remains particularly attractive, with the metallic eagle retaining strong definition and the cockade displaying good color and detail. The M43 Einheitsfeldmuetze became one of the characteristic pieces of late-war German Army headgear and was worn across virtually every theater of operations from 1943 through the end of the war. Officer examples retaining their original separate metallic insignia are considerably more desirable than ordinary enlisted caps and have long been sought by advanced collectors of German uniforms and headgear. A strong, untouched-appearing example of a WWII German Heer officer’s M43 field cap, retaining its important silver-wire eagle and cockade and displaying the kind of period wear and character particularly valued in original combat-era headgear. Condition as photographed, with wear, soiling, age toning, and minor fabric deterioration consistent with period use and storage.
