Description

This excellent, original WWII German Model 1935 Heer double-decal Stahlhelm was manufactured by F.W. Quist of Esslingen, a principal combat-helmet manufacturer of the period. The interior shell is stamped "Q66," identifying Quist manufacture and a size 66 shell, with production lot number "3482" stamped into the rear skirt. The M35 is characterized by its separately inserted ventilation bushings and smooth rolled rim, distinguishing this early model from the later M40 and M42 patterns. Quist-produced M35 helmets are well documented with this precise marking configuration. The helmet retains its desirable early-war double-decal configuration. The wearer’s left side carries the Heer national eagle-and-swastika shield, while the opposite side retains the black, white, and red national tricolor shield. Both decals remain remarkably well-preserved, with the eagle displaying significant detail in the feathers and central insignia, while the national shield remains vibrant. The double-decal system was a hallmark of early M35 production, and surviving examples featuring both intact insignias are particularly coveted by collectors. The exterior finish retains a substantial portion of the original smooth, field-gray/apfelgruen factory paint, accompanied by scattered scratches, abrasions, and minor areas of finish loss consistent with period service and handling. The wear patterns observed on the decals are visually harmonious with the condition of the surrounding shell finish. The interior houses the original brown leather liner, which features characteristic ventilation holes and the correct liner band arrangement. The leather exhibits age-darkening, light creasing, and minor wear consistent with use. The brown leather chinstrap remains attached with its aluminum buckle and displays natural surface wear and age-consistent patina. This is a highly attractive example of the classic early-war German Army M35, combining the desirable Q66 Quist shell, a clear lot number, both Heer and national-color decals, and the original interior assembly. It stands as an iconic representation of early Wehrmacht infantry equipage.
