Description

SCARCE WWII German Panzervernichtungsabzeichen in Silber, Tank Destruction Badge. WWII German Panzervernichtungsabzeichen in Silber – a single-award sleeve badge marking one enemy tank destroyed in close combat by an unnamed Wehrmacht soldier.
This example represents the Sonderabzeichen fuer das Niederkaempfen von Panzerkampfwagen durch Einzelkaempfer, instituted by Adolf Hitler’s order of 9 March 1942 to recognize individual soldiers who destroyed an enemy tank alone using hand-carried close-assault weapons – Teller mines, Hafthohlladung magnetic charges, satchel charges, or the early Panzerfaust. No accompanying documentation, unit history, or recipient name survives with this piece, and as with the great majority of surviving badges the identity of the soldier who earned it has been lost; the story here rests in the object itself and in the well-documented history of the decoration it represents.
The badge answered a real and desperate tactical problem faced on the Eastern and later Western Fronts: infantrymen confronting Soviet T-34s and other armor with nothing but hand weapons, frequently at point-blank range and at extreme personal risk. Each silver-grade badge, sewn to the upper right sleeve, denoted one confirmed tank kill; a gold grade was introduced in December 1943 for five destroyed vehicles. Given the near-suicidal nature of single-handed tank hunting, relatively few soldiers survived to be credited with multiple awards, and the badge became one of the most respected marks of individual bravery within the German army.
The badge itself is of standard wartime pattern: an unmarked, blackened white-metal miniature Panzer IV silhouette with crisply rendered turret, gun, hull, and roadwheel detail, mounted centrally on a woven aluminum-thread tress bordered by twin black selvage stripes. The tress is stitched to a backing of field-grey wool tunic cloth, cut and folded along the raw edges in the manner typical of a badge removed from or tailor-applied to a period tunic, consistent with genuine wartime manufacture and issue.
The lot comprises the single sleeve badge only, with no accompanying case, documentation, or additional insignia. Condition is very good for the type: the silver woven tress shows scattered oxidation and small foxing spots along with minor fraying at the folded edges; the blackened tank finish remains largely intact with sharp definition; the field-grey wool backing shows light fiber wear and mild discoloration consistent with age and long period storage.
A well-preserved example of one of the Third Reich’s most hard-won combat awards, silently honoring the single-handed, close-quarters destruction of an enemy tank.
