Lot 69:
Description
WWII German Wehrmacht Shoulder Boards, Lot of 5 – Officer & NCO Ranks. Lot of five (5) German WWII Wehrmacht shoulder boards and straps (Schulterstuecke and Schulterklappen), a mixed grouping of officer and non-commissioned officer rank insignia spanning multiple Waffenfarben branch colors. This lot illustrates the intricate rank and branch identification system employed by the German Armed Forces during the Third Reich era, circa 1935-1945. No named wearer, unit history, or individual service record accompanies the grouping; the pieces are catalogued as removed insignia, and no attribution to a specific soldier or formation can be confirmed. The photographs supplied for this lot were unfortunately not accessible for close examination at the time of cataloguing, so specific construction details, maker markings, and precise branch colors reported here rely on the consignor’s description and general period knowledge rather than direct visual confirmation; interested bidders are strongly encouraged to request additional detail images before bidding. Within the Wehrmacht uniform system, shoulder boards and straps served as immediate visual indicators of both branch of service and rank. Officers of company and field grade typically wore boards of braided or twisted metallic cord (Geflecht) mounted over branch-colored underlay, the Waffenfarbe denoting infantry, artillery, signals, medical, or other corps affiliation – a system standardized across the Heer and adapted with variation by the Luftwaffe. Non-commissioned officers wore simpler wool straps trimmed with distinctive metallic or rayon tress (Tresseband), the width and material of which distinguished grades from Unteroffizier through Stabsfeldwebel, with rank stars (Rangsterne) applied as needed. Collectively, these five pieces offer a tangible cross-section of German rank structure as worn in field and garrison service throughout the war. The lot comprises five distinct boards and straps: examples consistent with officer-style braided or corded construction over colored underlay, alongside additional straps trimmed with NCO-style metallic tress in differing Waffenfarbe shades. Backing fabric, where discernible, appears consistent with period wool tunic material, and several pieces retain remnants of button-loop or tongue attachments typical of insignia removed from a uniform rather than issued separately. No maker marks or unit-specific stampings have been verified. Condition is reported as fair to good and consistent with genuine period use: expect minor oxidation and toning to metallic threads, light fraying or chafing along trim edges, and modest wear to underlying wool from decades of storage and handling. No cases, documents, or associated insignia are included. A solid five-piece study lot of genuine WWII German Wehrmacht rank insignia, offering both officer and NCO examples across varied branch colors for the collector or researcher of Third Reich uniform components.
