Fall 2026 Militaria and Aviation Auction
Lot 75:
Description
Lot of 20 U.S. Medal Presentation Cases, Named DSM, BSM, PH & Selective Service. Lot of twenty vintage U.S. military and government medal presentation cases, WWII through Vietnam/Cold War era, including four gilt-titled named examples – Distinguished Service Medal, Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and Selective Service Medal – together with sixteen standard leatherette cases gilt-stamped UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. This grouping is an assembly of period hardware rather than a single named history: no recipient, serial number, or citation accompanies any individual case, and the lot should be understood as a study or display group of official U.S. award packaging rather than a documented service grouping. No separate biography or provenance is claimed. That said, the cases themselves trace the material evolution of American medal presentation practice across four decades of national service. During the Second World War the U.S. government and its contract case-makers commonly embossed the award name directly onto the case lid in gold leaf within a decorative rope or floral border, as seen here on the Distinguished Service Medal, Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and Selective Service Medal examples – a practice that gave each decoration its own distinct presentation identity when formally awarded to soldiers, sailors, and draftees alike. By the Korean War and increasingly through Vietnam, the services consolidated toward a standardized navy-blue leatherette case with a gilt Greek-key or laurel band and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA stamped at the lower edge, allowing one case design to be issued interchangeably across the growing roster of American decorations and service medals. The sixteen unnamed cases in this lot are representative of that later, more economical standardization. Each case is a rectangular, spring-catch hinged box in period leatherette over a wood or pressboard core. The four named boxes carry their award titles in serif gold-leaf lettering within ornamental borders – Bronze Star Medal, Selective Service Medal, and Purple Heart each centered within a decorative rectangle, and Distinguished Service Medal set beside a vertical gilt laurel band above UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. The sixteen generic examples show the familiar gilt laurel-and-ribbon vertical band flanking the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA legend at the lower edge, with minor variations in leatherette color (navy, gray-blue, and near-black) and gilt tone. No manufacturer marks are visible in the supplied exterior photographs; interiors, typically satin and velvet-lined medal beds, have not been individually inspected. No medals, ribbons, or paperwork accompany the lot – cases only. Condition is mixed and consistent with age and handling, ranging from fair to very good: surfaces show scattered scuffing, rubbing, edge wear, dulled gilt, and adhesive residue throughout, with one case exhibiting heavy leatherette/paper peeling to the lid and several others showing smaller conspicuous losses. All twenty examples appear structurally sound from the exterior, with hinges and clasps intact though unverified in operation. A useful reference and display lot for collectors seeking authentic period cases – named and generic alike – to reunite with orphaned medals or to study the government’s changing presentation standards from WWII through Vietnam.
