Fall 2026 Militaria and Aviation Auction
Lot 83:
Description
Original Imperial German Naval Fliers’ Commemorative Badge, or Flieger-Erinnerungsabzeichen der Kaiserlichen Marine, produced by the noted Berlin firm C.E. Juncker. This distinctive badge was intended for former qualified naval aviators of the Kaiserliche Marine and served as a commemorative insignia recognizing prior flying service rather than as the standard active-duty naval pilot qualification badge. The obverse features the characteristic Imperial crown above an oval wreath of oak and laurel surrounding a prominent perched eagle, with a radiant rising-sun motif appearing below. The design is finely executed in high relief and retains an attractive aged gilt finish with natural toning and wear that accentuate the crown, eagle, wreath, and background details. The reverse displays the distinctive radiating stamped construction and is clearly maker marked "C.E. JUNCKER BERLIN, " identifying one of the most respected manufacturers of Imperial German military and aviation insignia. The badge retains its period barrel hinge, long vertical pin, and wire catch assembly, with age and patination visible throughout. Construction, hardware, maker marking, and overall form are consistent with known Juncker-produced Imperial naval aviation badges. Imperial German naval aviation insignia is significantly scarcer than the more commonly encountered Army flying badges, reflecting the comparatively small size of the Kaiserliche Marine’s aviation arm during the First World War. This example is particularly desirable for its clear Juncker maker mark, strong surviving detail, and historically important association with the earliest era of German naval aviation. A scarce and visually impressive original Kaiserliche Marine Flieger-Erinnerungsabzeichen by C.E. Juncker, Berlin, representing commemorative recognition of qualified Imperial German naval flying service. Condition as photographed.
