Description

This lot features an extremely rare and highly specialized piece of early military aviation gear: an Original World War I Royal Flying Corps RFC Leather Cowl Helmet. This type of protective headgear, often extending far down the neck and shoulders, was characteristic of the RFC and early RAF, providing essential protection against cold and wind in the open cockpits of WWI aircraft.
The helmet is constructed from soft, tan or medium-brown leather and features an integrated long leather cowl or bib that extends over the chest and back. This design distinguishes it as a dedicated cold-weather piece. The helmet is fully lined on the interior with natural sheepskin or shearling, particularly around the face opening and neck for maximum insulation. The crown is secured by adjustable leather straps and buckles, and the side flaps feature leather pockets or pouches, likely for early communication components or oxygen lines. A fur trim is visible around the facial opening.
A key feature for provenance is the War Department WD acceptance stamp visible on the interior lining. The stamp includes the characteristic broad arrow mark, the size 32, and the letters W D, confirming its official British military issue, consistent with the WWI-era RFC or early RAF transition 1912-1918 . The leather displays a rich, aged patina with minor staining and wear consistent with genuine use. This specialized cowl helmet is a scarce survival, representing the harsh, cold conditions faced by WWI aircrews. In almost MINT condition
