December 7th Militaria and Aviation Auction
Lot 329:
Description
This is a textbook example of a Vietnam War era United States Navy Type G-1 Intermediate Flight Jacket, manufactured during the height of the conflict in Southeast Asia. Produced by the Star Sportswear Mfg. Co. under the military specification MIL-J-7823D WP , this jacket bears the contract number DSA 100-68-C-0759, dating its production specifically to 1968. The jacket is constructed from durable dark brown goatskin leather which has developed a distinct, combat-worn character. It features the hallmark -USN- perforation stamp on the wind flap, a detail introduced in the post-WWII era to denote government property.
The -D- series G-1s are historically significant as the flight gear worn by Navy and Marine Corps aviators flying phantom strikes and helicopter sorties during the Tet Offensive and beyond. This example retains its synthetic -Dynel- fur collar a standard update for this specification , two button-down patch pockets, and the bi-swing back for cockpit mobility. The original rayon lining is intact with a clearly legible label indicating a desirable Size 44. The jacket shows honest signs of service, with surface scuffing to the leather and moderate fraying and holes to the original wool waistband, consistent with a piece of survival gear that saw active duty over 50 years ago.
