Description

A collection of approximately 30 original black-and-white silver gelatin photographs and a printed menu documenting service in the Royal Air Force (RAF) Middle East Command during 1943. The primary piece of ephemera is a printed menu for Headquarters (Unit) R.A.F. Middle East, dated Christmas Day 1943, which lists a traditional meal including Roast Fayum Turkey and Christmas Pudding. The reverse of one document features eight contemporary signatures in ink and pencil: H. L. Delbridge Sgt., L. Reason, C. W. E. Carren Q M, Les Richardson, A. W. Brown, G. H. Lawson, W. H. Mumford, and Geo. M. J. Oxford. The photographic archive provides visual documentation of aircraft and personnel in the North African and Mediterranean theaters. Featured aircraft include multiple Hawker Hurricane fighters in desert camouflage, a Bristol Beaufighter Mk IF with serial number V8442 clearly visible, and a North American Harvard trainer marked O-4. Personnel are shown in formal group portraits and candid shots wearing Khaki Drill (KD) tropical uniforms. One photograph depicts a pilot in full flight gear, including a Sidcot suit and flight boots. Other images show the interior of an administrative operations room, desert airfields, and coastal encampments.
