Description
This is a US Navy Bureau of Ordnance Mark 9 Mod 1 illuminated gun sight manufactured by American Cystoscope Makers, Inc. of New York. Dated 1941, this optical instrument was a standard component for anti-aircraft weaponry during World War II, most notably the 20mm Oerlikon cannon. The device is constructed of a black-finished metal housing and features an integrated dimmer control dial with settings for OFF, NIGHT, and DIMMER. A riveted metal identification plate on the base reads U.S. NAVY-BU. OF ORD. ILLUMINATED SIGHT MARK 9 MOD. 1 and includes inspector mark FTM and serial number 55652. The unit includes an electrical lead for a 2-volt lamp, specified as O.S. 1233. This lot includes the original outer and inner cardboard storage boxes, the outer of which retains its original factory label identifying the contents as a Mark IX sight. Also present is the specialized Mark 9 hood wrench stamped MA BALDWIN and its original printed paper protective sleeve.
