Description

This World War II-era Type A-10A aircraft bubble sextant was manufactured by the Fairchild Camera and Instrument Corporation of New York. The precision navigation instrument is primarily constructed of metal with a black crinkle-finish housing. It features a knurled eyepiece, various adjustment knobs, and a white-painted block with a red arrow and the text ENLARGE / HOLD UP TO. A control dial on the upper housing is marked OFF and ON in red. The instrument bears a metal data plate identifying it as PROPERTY, AIR FORCES, U.S. ARMY with serial number AF 44-14772 and order number W30-053 AC-1470. The set is housed in its original wooden carrying case finished in olive drab paint with a metal handle and dual latches. The interior of the case is fitted with dark-stained wood blocks and black padding. A stencil inside the lid provides instructions referencing handbook AN-05-35-33. The case also features a data plate with serial number AF 44-765 and order number W30-053 AC-806, indicating the instrument and case are a mismatched set. Included accessories consist of a cylindrical silver-tone metal tube, internal wiring for illumination, and a paper envelope marked PLASTIC DISC / FAIRCHILD A-10 and A-10A SEXTANTS.
