Description

This is a British-pattern haversack for a gas mask, specifically the MK VII type, which was widely issued to United States Army personnel during World War II. The bag is constructed from heavy-duty Olive Drab No. 3 cotton canvas. It features a large main compartment with a fold-over top flap and a smaller front pocket secured by two brass snap fasteners. The interior contains two rows of vertical webbing loops, originally designed to hold gas mask accessories such as anti-dimming compound and replacement lenses. The exterior flap is marked with a black ink US stencil. The front body of the bag, beneath the pocket flap, features a handwritten personalization in dark ink reading FREEMAN followed by a series of digits, likely a service number or laundry mark. The bag includes a canvas shoulder strap and a brass buckle closure at the base.
