Description

This lot consists of a United States Army Air Forces USAAF Type AN-H-15 summer-weight flying helmet paired with a set of Polaroid aviation goggles. The helmet is constructed from tan cotton twill and was manufactured by the Bates Shoe Co. as indicated by the interior label. The helmet features three leather goggle retention straps with snap closures and a leather-reinforced chinstrap with a metal buckle. It is equipped with integrated black rubber earcups embossed with the word FRONT and an orientation arrow. The interior contains a black woven label with yellow embroidered text stating SPEC. AN-H-15, SMALL, ORDER NO. 44-2881-AF, ST. NO. 8300-401535, BATES SHOE CO., and ARMY AIR FORCES. The accompanying goggles feature black frames and dark-tinted lenses. The bridge of the goggles is marked with a circular logo featuring stylized interlocking characters consistent with the American Optical mark. The upper edge of the left lens is marked POLAROID. The goggles are attached to the helmet via an adjustable tan elasticized fabric strap. The interior of the earcups features chamois-covered padding. The goggles are a rare variation however, the rubber padding has deteriorated.
