Description
A group of US Navy aviation flight gear dating to the Korean War era, attributed to Fighter Squadron 33 (VF-33) Starfighters. The collection is centered on a Gentex H-4 rigid flight helmet. The interior of the helmet contains a blue woven label marked H-4 LARGE, CONTRACT N383s-15583A, GENTEX, GENERAL TEXTILE MILLS, INC. The name BACKUS is handwritten in ink on the interior shell. The exterior is finished in metallic gold paint over a green base layer and features a black stenciled Naval Aviator wing insignia on the front. It retains its original communication wiring, earcups, and oxygen mask attachment hardware. The group includes a cloth summer flying helmet with an interior label marked HELMETS-SUMMER FLYING, SPEC. NO. MIL-H-7151 (AER), CONTRACT NO. N383S-87934, SIZE EX. LARGE, SLOTE & KLEIN, INC. Also present is a black fabric protective helmet bag with yellow piping, featuring a yellow stenciled four-pointed star insignia and the unit designation VF-33. Completing the set is a pair of B-8 style flight goggles with dark-tinted lenses, black rubberized frames, and a tan elasticized strap.
