Lot 368:
Description
American Folk Art portrait is executed in oil on canvas and has been laid down on a Masonite support. The work depicts a young man identified as James Bower, rendered in the limner style characteristic of the early 19th century. The subject is shown with stylized, linear features, wearing a high white collar, a dark cravat, a pale yellow waistcoat, and a dark double-breasted coat adorned with brass buttons. The figure is set against a dark, neutral background. Two handwritten labels are affixed to the verso. The upper label is inscribed Ja. Bower / Goodwin, Pin… / Feb. 1830, providing the sitter identity, the date, and an attribution to an artist named Edwin Weyburn Goodwin. The lower label documents a 1977 conservation history, noting the painting was cleaned with xylene, mounted on Masonite with contact cement, and that losses were filled with gesso and rabbit-skin glue. The painting is currently unframed with a finished brown edge on the Masonite. Measures 25X21
