Description
An Art Nouveau sterling silver vesta case, or matchsafe, of rectangular form with a side-hinged lid. The exterior surfaces are decorated in high-relief repousse with a central nude maiden figure. The figure is depicted with long, flowing hair that transitions into undulating whiplash curves, forming the decorative borders of the case. Small floral clusters are intertwined within the strands of hair. This motif is mirrored on both the front and reverse sides of the item. The inner rim of the case is stamped with the word STERLING and a small, worn maker mark that is not clearly legible.
