Lot 60:
Description
A cast brass match safe or vesta case designed in the Japanese Meiji period style, likely dating from the late 19th to early 20th century. The piece is shaped with a high relief coiled dragon motif that spans the entire surface of the container. On one side, the dragon’s claw is depicted grasping a flaming pearl, a traditional East Asian symbolic element. The lid is integrated into the dragon’s head, featuring a side-mounted hinge. The surface displays a darkened patina in the recessed areas of the scales and facial features, contrasting with the highlights on the raised portions. A small loop for attachment to a chain is located near the hinge. No maker’s marks or signatures are visible.
