Description
This 19th-century oil on canvas portrait depicts a gentleman in formal attire, rendered in a provincial or folk-art style. The sitter is shown in a three-quarter length pose, wearing a dark frock coat, a light-colored waistcoat with a repeating pattern, and a high white cravat with a dark bow. In his left hand, he holds a blue-covered publication; the spine is legible with the words MIRROR and FINE ARTS. The painting is characterized by simplified modeling and a flattened perspective, common to non-academic portraiture of the period. The canvas is mounted on a wooden four-member stretcher with later metal corner reinforcements. The verso features two paper labels from MAPLE’S DEPOSITORY, one of which contains a handwritten inscription in blue ink reading D above Montague Brown. The stretcher and frame also bear various chalk and pencil marks, including H37, 1732, and Bourke St 1904. The work is housed in a period gilt-composition frame with ornate molding.
