signed by Edwin Weyburn Goodwin) (Goodwin, Pinxt), dated February 1830 Oil on canvas portrait of a distinguished young gentleman (James Bower), dressed in a dark coat with brass buttons, high white collar, and black cravat. The sitter is depicted against a neutral ground, his piercing blue eyes and finely modeled features characteristic of early 19th century American portraiture. Verso with old inscription label identifying the work as – Ja. Bower, Goodwin, Pin?, Feb. 1830.- Conservation notes affixed to the reverse indicate cleaning in 1977 with xylene, mounting on Masonite with contact cement, and stabilization with gesso-rabbit glue. Dimensions: approx. 30 x 25 in. (sight). Condition: Fair; areas of craquelure, paint losses, abrasions, and inpainting needed; prior conservation treatment noted. Loss to upper background and scratches across the surface; stable but in need of professional restoration. Provenance: From a private collection, upstate New York.
