Lot 271:
Description
Oil on canvas portrait of a young gentleman seated in a red-upholstered chair, wearing a dark coat, waistcoat, and cravat. The sitter holds a copy of the New York Mirror, Fine Arts Volume, July 1836, a detail that both dates and contextualizes the work within the mid-19th century American cultural scene. Painted with strong, direct features and a restrained background, the portrait captures the refinement of an educated man of the period. Housed in a gilt wood frame of period style. Verso with old labels, including ?Maple?s Depository, ? suggesting historic storage or provenance through a notable art and antiques depository. Dimensions: approx. 34 x 28 in. Condition: Craquelure, scattered surface losses, and abrasions; some areas of inpainting and frame wear. Stable overall but in need of conservation to restore full presence. Provenance: From a private collection, upstate New York.
