Lot 66:
Description
The print depicts the iconic Avro Lancaster B Mk III Special bomber, AJ-G ED932 , which was commanded by Wing Commander Guy Gibson during the famed Dambusters Raid Operation Chastise on May 16/17, 1943. This piece is a historically significant limited-edition print titled -The Dam Busters – Wartime Survivors of No. 617 Squadron, Royal Air Force,- and is valuable because it bears original autographs from many key figures associated with the mission and Bomber Command. Notable signatories often found on this edition include Wing Commander Leonard Cheshire, who later commanded 617 Squadron; Marshal of the Royal Air Force Arthur T. Harris, the Commander-in-Chief of Bomber Command; and Victoria Cross recipients like pilot William Reid. Additionally, many of the original Dambusters crew members, such as Toby Foxlee, Douglas Hallows, James O Brien, and Bert Senera from various aircraft that participated in the attack, have autographed the print, creating a unique record of the men who successfully breached the German dams.
