Description

This is an excellent, vintage example of a United States Air Medal presented in its original, fitted presentation case, dating from the World War II era. The exterior of the case is black leatherette with gold tooling and is clearly marked AIR MEDAL on the lid. The interior is lined with a yellow velvet or satin fabric, contoured to perfectly secure the medal and its miniature lapel pin. The medal itself is a bronze 16-pointed star with an American bald eagle soaring in relief across the star, carrying lightning bolts in its talons, and is suspended from a blue and gold-orange striped ribbon. Established in 1942, the Air Medal was widely awarded to US Army Air Forces and Navy aircrews for meritorious achievement during aerial flight. Crucially, the reverse of the medal s suspension bar is stamped with a control number, 34143, which identifies this as an officially issued, numbered award. The set is in exceptional condition, with the medal retaining its original finish and the ribbon showing vibrant color, and the preservation of the original presentation box and miniature lapel pin make this a highly desirable, complete collectible from the period.
