December 7th Militaria and Aviation Auction
Lot 102:
Description
This is an extremely rare and highly significant piece of World War II Royal Air Force RAF insignia, identified as an award bar to the British Distinguished Flying Cross DFC, specifically dating to 1943. The item is a rectangular bar crafted from gold-toned metal, typically bronze or gilded metal. The front face features a small flying eagle in the center, which signifies a second award of the decoration. Unlike standard medals, the DFC bar was issued to airmen who had already received the cross, denoting a subsequent act of outstanding courage or devotion to duty during active operations against the enemy in the air. The reverse of the bar is often stamped with service or date marks, and the visible etching or stamping on the reverse includes what appears to be the number 1943 or similar characters, confirming its period-of-issue within World War II. Due to the high casualty rates for aircrew and the exceptional gallantry required for a second DFC award, known as DFC and Bar, these second award bars are profoundly scarce and represent the highest levels of combat achievement by an Allied airman.
