December 7th Militaria and Aviation Auction
Lot 101:
Description
his is an interesting grouping of three distinct pieces of late 19th and early 20th-century American military and veteran memorabilia. The first item is a medal from the Filii Veteranorum, Latin for Sons of Veterans, which is likely associated with the Sons of Veterans, U.S.A., an organization founded to preserve the memory of Union soldiers. The bronze medal features an eagle on top of a shield with the Latin inscription GRATIA DEI SERVATUS meaning Saved by the Grace of God, and is suspended from a ribbon of blue, white, and red stripes, with a top brooch reading FILII VETERANORUM. The second item is a New Jersey National Guard Marksmanship Medal, featuring the Great Seal of the State of New Jersey and the inscription NATIONAL GUARD STATE OF NEW JERSEY. Suspended from a sunburst suspension bar, the top brooch is marked MARKSMAN YEARS with a number 2, indicating two years of marksmanship qualification. The third item is a small, lithographed pinback button likely dating from the Spanish-American War era or a related naval campaign, featuring an image of a naval vessel and the state name MAINE, likely commemorating the USS Maine or a vessel named after the state. This collection represents a cross-section of military service, veterans organizations, and state-level military activities from the period spanning the late 1800s to the turn of the century.
