December 7th Militaria and Aviation Auction
Lot 183:
Description
An evocative relic of the Imperial Japanese Army IJA , this is an original World War II issue tropical sun helmet, often referred to as a pith helmet or jungle hat boonie style . This headgear was standard issue for Japanese troops fighting in the harsh tropical and jungle environments of Southeast Asia and the Pacific. The helmet is constructed of light canvas or heavy cotton in a sun-faded tan or olive drab color, providing crucial protection against the elements. A key identifying feature is the hand-sewn yellow star insignia on the front, representing the standard rank or unit insignia for the IJA. The construction includes a cloth band around the base of the crown and a tattered, adjustable cloth chinstrap, reflecting genuine field use and age. The interior is complete with the original multi-point cloth suspension and sweatband, and subtle markings or kanji may be visible on the fabric lining, attesting to its service history. The soft, foldable style of the helmet made it practical for combat use, unlike the heavier cork pith helmets used by some European forces. This is a genuinely rare piece of Pacific Theater militaria, appealing to collectors who value authentic, battle-worn equipment.
