Lot 171:
Many years ago, the late Dr. Tom Nier set out to try to identify WWII US decorations by the numbers that were inscribed on the medals themselves. In that time, he was able to identify 574 LOMs that were traceable by number. This medal is one of those examples. The number 11462 is engraved on the wrap brooch, and through Dr. Nier’s research, he was able to identify the recipient as Master Sergeant Lee W. Popple (ASN 2046550) who served in the 343rd Engineer Regiment. This unit earned TEN campaign stars during the war. This Legion of Merit is a fine example with a long ribbon drape and nice enameling. There is some wear to the finish, but the medal displays beautifully. The medal is accompanied by a pin back ribbon bar and a lapel pin. All of which comes in a titled case of issue. Being able to identify the medal by the number makes it a very scarce collector’s piece.
