Description
During the 1916 Easter Rising, armed actions were primarily concentrated in Dublin, carried out by units such as the Dublin Brigade of the Irish Volunteers, the Irish Citizen Army, Fianna Éireann, Cumann na mBan, and the Hibernian Rifles. Outside the capital, notable activity also occurred in Wexford, Galway, and Dundalk, with individual Volunteers taking part across 23 counties. According to records maintained by Ireland’s Department of Defence, 2,594 individuals were officially recognized as having taken part in active service during the Rising—qualifying them for pensions and commemorative recognition, including the 1916 Medal.The establishment of the Service Medal (1917–1921) in 1942 led to significant public engagement. Veterans, their families, and the broader public submitted applications in large numbers. Lot includes copied research including what appears to be a transcript of an interview with Walsh. Medals are not named.Joseph Patrick Walsh joined the volunteers in 1913. He was deported after the surrender and released in September 1916. He served throughout the War of Independence and took the side of the Anti-Treaty.
