Description

Exceptional WWI Captain’s Military Cross and Trio Group to Captain R.C. Thomas, 9th Bn. Durham Light Infantry, Territorial Force, attached to the 174th Tunneling Company, Royal Engineers. Mounted group with period named trio, and engraved Military Cross. Captain Thomas received the Military Cross for the following action: For conspicous gallantry and devotion to duty. During an intense hostile bombardment of a village, an officer and several men were burried, wounded and gassed in an underground chamber, which had been caved in by shell fire. Captain Thomas displayed magnificent gallantry and promptness in making persistent efforts to rescue the imprisoned men, not only under heavy fire, but under conditions rendered most dangerous by falls of ground and poisonous gas. Although suffering from effects of the latter himself, his energy and self-sacrificing devotion deserve the highest praise. This lot is accompanied by copied research and a photocopy of the London Gazette with citation. Medals are very good to Fine.
