Description
This is an exceptional and highly decorated World War II grouping belonging to Reynolds D. Van ScoIt, confirmed by the hand-engraving on his gallantry medal. The lot consists of three separate, cased medals, each in its original fitted presentation box marked SILVER STAR MEDAL, CONSPICUOUS SERVICE CROSS STATE OF NEW YORK, Numbered 53, and PURPLE HEART. The Silver Star Medal, the nation s third-highest decoration for combat valor, is officially engraved on the reverse with his name REYNOLDS D. VAN SCOIT and the inscription FOR GALLANTRY IN ACTION , confirming his distinguished bravery in combat. The Purple Heart medal, awarded for wounds sustained in action, appears unengraved on the face, but is a genuine period piece that documents his sacrifice. The third medal is the State of New York Conspicuous Service Cross, awarded by the state of New York to its citizens for heroism and exceptional service, further confirming his ties to New York, as seen in the included list of veterans and an entry for Van Scoyt, Reynolds HQ, 3d Armored Division, G.O. No. 50 1944.
