Lot 191:
Description
World War II Era US Army Air Corps Officer Service Cap Overseas Cap or Visor Cap, commonly referred to as a crusher cap due to its soft construction. This cap would have been worn by a commissioned officer in the US Army Air Forces AAF.
The cap is constructed from Olive Drab OD wool twill fabric and features a distinctive soft crown and visor. The front is adorned with the large, gold-toned Officers Eagle Insignia, featuring the US Great Seal eagle, indicating a commissioned officer. The hat band is secured with a brown leather chinstrap fastened by two small gold-toned buttons, which are typically stamped with the US Great Seal. The visor or bill is constructed of brown leather and features a smooth, polished finish. The cap retains its original shape, showing light wear and minor creasing. Size 7
The interior provides exceptional provenance. The cap features a wide brown leather sweatband, which is embossed with the manufacturer or model name THE LEE FLIGHT. The satin lining inside the crown is a distinctive orange-gold color and features a printed graphic with a flying airplane and text advertising THE LEE FLIGHT A Berkshire Product. The interior leather is also lightly stenciled with what appears to be the owner s initials or identifying marks G.R.C. The high-quality manufacturing and the identifiable markings confirm this as a desirable, period-manufactured officers cap.
