December 7th Militaria and Aviation Auction
Lot 251:
Description
A fantastic example of rare, private-purchase or early-war issue Japanese goggles B_jin-B_f_ Megane, housed in their original presentation case. These goggles were designed for wind and dust protection, frequently utilized by early Imperial Japanese Army IJA or Navy IJN pilots, vehicle drivers, or motorcycle troops. The goggles feature soft, dark leather face cushions sewn around the metal frames, clear or lightly tinted glass lenses, and a functional adjustable elastic/leather head strap. The condition is excellent for their age, with the leather showing a handsome patina and the glass lenses exhibiting some clouding or delamination indicative of period materials.
The goggles are presented in their original, distinctive oval-shaped, reddish-brown paper or cardboard hard case, complete with a drawstring. The lid of the case features clear embossed Japanese kanji characters. The top line reads B_f_ Megane or Windproof – Dustproof Goggles, and the lower line reads Maruki-sei or Made by Maruki, identifying the manufacturer. The presence of the original case, especially one with clearly legible maker and item markings, significantly enhances the collector value and display quality of this genuine artifact of WWII Japanese equipment.
