Description
This authentic World War II German Luftwaffe leather flight jacket represents the iconic private purchase style favored by fighter pilots on the Western and Eastern Fronts. Often referred to by collectors as the Cyclist or Hartmann style jacket this garment was a popular alternative to the bulky standard issue heated flight suits allowing for greater mobility and comfort within the cramped cockpits of high-performance aircraft like the Messerschmitt Bf 109 and Focke-Wulf Fw 190. Constructed of heavy brown leather which now displays a significant and distinct combat-worn patina the jacket features the classic short collar configuration a four-pocket front with slanted zippered chest pockets and button-snap adjustable cuffs. The insignia configuration is particularly desirable as it consists entirely of cloth badges sewn directly to the leather a practical field modification preferred by aircrew to avoid snagging in the cockpit. A cloth embroidered Luftwaffe eagle is zigzag stitched to the right breast while a rare cloth version of the Pilot Badge featuring the eagle within a wreath is sewn to the lower left pocket denoting the qualification of the wearer. The yellow piping on the slip-on shoulder boards indicates service in the Flight or Paratroop branch. A key detail for collectors is the main zipper which bears the distinctive triangular M logo identifying the hardware as a product of Metallwarenfabrik Muhlhausen a brand widely used by the Luftwaffe and Wehrmacht for leather garments during the 1930s and 1940s. The interior retains its original tan fabric lining which exhibits heavy wear tearing and staining consistent with extensive wartime service as well as faint white ink size or depot markings visible near the hem. This jacket captures the quintessential look of the Luftwaffe Jagdflieger ace and stands as a heavily used relic of the air war over Europe.
