Description

This authentic World War II United States Army Air Forces Type B-15A Intermediate Flight Jacket represents a crucial evolution in American aviation clothing during the latter stages of the war. Manufactured by Metro Sportswear Inc this Size 36 example is constructed from the standard olive drab cotton twill which replaced earlier leather flight gear to provide pilots with greater mobility and warmth in cramped cockpits. The jacket features the defining characteristics of the A modification model most notably the two triangular leather oxygen mask retention tabs sewn to the chest and the distinctive offset main zipper designed to prevent the slider from chafing the wearers chin. The large mouton fur collar remains intact providing the classic bomber look that would influence military fashion for decades while the left sleeve bears the standard pen and cigarette pocket. The interior retains its warm alpaca pile lining and the original woven specification label is clearly legible verifying the manufacturer and contract details. The garment displays honest signs of combat era usage particularly to the original wool knit cuffs and the ends of the sleeves which show heavy fraying and wear consistent with active service while the waistband remains intact. This piece serves as an excellent example of the transition from the B-10 to the eventual nylon flight jackets of the jet age.
