Description

This is an exceptional and highly desirable original U.S. Navy USN M-422A Intermediate Flying Jacket, a rare and classic piece of combat gear worn by Navy and Marine Corps aviators during World War Two. The M-422A specification represents the final, improved version of the G-1 jacket series before the standardization of the AN-J-3/A model.

The jacket features the iconic design elements that collectors seek: a rugged brown leather shell typically goatskin or goatskin-backed seal skin , large button-flapped patch pockets, and heavy-duty knit cuffs and waistband. The distinguishing feature is the genuine mouton fur collar shearling sheepskin which is intact and retains its rich brown color. The interior boasts a vibrant orange or red-brown lining, which is in excellent, clean condition.

The provenance is confirmed by the clear, original identification tag stitched beneath the collar: JACKETS, INTERMEDIATE, BUAERO – U.S. NAVY, SPECIFICATION M-422A. The tag clearly lists the manufacturer as GORDON & FERGUSON CO. with CONTRACT NO. NOs 416-A, confirming this jacket as a genuine wartime issue from a respected military contractor. The overall leather displays a beautiful, well-maintained patina, with only light wear visible on the knit areas, suggesting this jacket was extremely well-cared for. This particular specification and maker combination, coupled with the fine state of preservation, makes this an outstanding acquisition for any collection of naval aviation history.
