December 7th Militaria and Aviation Auction
Lot 332:
Description
This is an exceptionally rare and historically fascinating United States Navy Type G-1 Flight Jacket that documents a unique cross-service history during the Cold War. Manufactured by Cagleco Sportswear under the 1957 contract N383-39321A Spec MIL-J-7823 AER , this jacket is identified to Lieutenant jg Bob Allen, a US Naval Reserve aviator. The jacket itself is a classic mid-50s G-1, featuring a dark brown goatskin shell, a genuine mouton fur collar, and the perforated -USN- wind flap.
What makes this garment a true collector s piece is the insignia configuration, which highlights the interoperability between Naval Aviation, the Marine Corps, and the Air Force during the 1950s. The right chest features the large, vibrant patch of Marine Fighter Squadron 514 VMF-514 . The design depicts a macabre -Singing Skull- wearing a vintage flight helmet and sticking its tongue out, surrounded by musical notesÑa distinctive emblem often associated with the squadron s Corsair heritage -Whistling Death- and their later transition to jet aircraft like the F9F Cougar.
Adding to the intrigue is the patch on the left shoulder: an -Expert- variant of the USAF Air Defense Command ADC insignia. The presence of a Navy pilot LTJG Allen wearing a Marine Squadron patch VMF-514 along with an Air Force qualification patch is highly unusual. It suggests LTJG Allen was likely involved in a cross-service exchange program or that VMF-514 was integrated into the Continental Air Defense mission, participating in USAF-adjudicated gunnery or rocketry competitions such as -William Tell.- The jacket shows honest service wear with some scuffing to the leather, and the wool knits appear to be period replacements with a distinctive reddish-brown hue often seen in depot repairs of the era.
