Description
This is a rare and historically significant military artifact, identified by the accompanying tag as a British War of 1812 Shako Hat Side Button discovered near Fort George in Canada, a key site during the conflict. The button is circular and made of metal, likely brass or pewter, and displays considerable wear and heavy patina consistent with being recovered from the ground. The central design is clearly embossed and features the British Royal Crest, specifically a lion statant guardant facing left, positioned atop an Imperial Crown or King s Crown. This design signifies the button s use by a British regular army regiment during the early 19th century, confirming its role as an official uniform component. Its specific location of recovery near Fort George, which was successfully captured by the Americans in May 1813 before being retaken by the British later that year, imbues the button with a tangible connection to the conflict.
